Brexit: PM sends EU unsigned request seeking Brexit delay – BBC News

Boris Johnson has sent a request to the EU for a delay to Brexit – but without his signature.

The request was accompanied by a second letter, signed by Mr Johnson, which says he believes that a delay would be a mistake.

The PM was required by law to ask the EU for an extension to the 31 October deadline after losing a Commons vote.

EU Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that he had received the extension request.

He did not provide details of its content, but added that he will now consult EU leaders “on how to react”.

Hours after losing a crunch vote in a historic Saturday session in the House of Commons, the prime minister ordered a senior diplomat to send an unsigned photocopy of the call by MPs set out in the so-called Benn Act, passed last month.

Brexit: Boris Johnson agrees new Brexit deal with EU – BBC News

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared earlier today that he’d struck a new Brexit agreement with the European Union — ‘a great new deal’ in his words that ‘takes back control’. But crucially the deal still needs the approval of both the UK and European parliaments.

And at Westminster, there is uncertainty about the likelihood of MPs giving their approval when they meet in emergency session on Saturday. Northern Ireland’s DUP, whose support Boris Johnson needs, has already rejected it. And Labour says this deal is much worse for the UK than the one negotiated by Theresa May.

Huw Edwards presents the BBC News at Ten live from Brussels and hears from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, Ireland correspondent Emma Vardy, economics editor Faisal Islam and deputy political editor John Pienaar.

MPs vote against the Prime Minister’s divorce deal -BBC News

MPs have again rejected Theresa May’s EU withdrawal agreement on the day the UK was due to leave the EU.

The government lost by 344 votes to 286. It means the UK has missed an EU deadline to leave with a deal and delay Brexit until 22nd May.

So for now, 12th April is our Brexit day. Either we leave with no deal, or the Prime Minister asks Brussels for an extension – and it could be a long one.

Parliament to vote again on Brexit – BBC News

The British government has confirmed that parliament will vote on Brexit again on Friday, but only on one part of the deal reached with the European Union.
Members of parliament will vote on the withdrawal agreement including the Irish ‘backstop’, divorce bill and citizens’ rights.

But it will not amount to a third ‘meaningful vote’ on the deal, as it will not include a vote on the UK’s future relationship with the EU.

Meanwhile the British Chambers of Commerce said MPs need to stop “chasing rainbows” when it comes to resolving the Brexit impasse. At their annual conference, they said the Brexit uncertainty is already doing “real world damage” to the UK economy.

The 29th March was meant to be the day that Britain left the European Union. The BBC has been talking to voters in Weston-Super-Mare in North Somerset, where like the UK as a whole, they voted 52 to 48 in favour of Leaving.
