Brexit: Boris Johnson agrees new Brexit deal with EU – BBC News

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared earlier today that he’d struck a new Brexit agreement with the European Union — ‘a great new deal’ in his words that ‘takes back control’. But crucially the deal still needs the approval of both the UK and European parliaments.

And at Westminster, there is uncertainty about the likelihood of MPs giving their approval when they meet in emergency session on Saturday. Northern Ireland’s DUP, whose support Boris Johnson needs, has already rejected it. And Labour says this deal is much worse for the UK than the one negotiated by Theresa May.

Huw Edwards presents the BBC News at Ten live from Brussels and hears from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, Ireland correspondent Emma Vardy, economics editor Faisal Islam and deputy political editor John Pienaar.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson in parliament language row- BBC News

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says tempers need to calm down in Parliament, after torrid scenes in the Commons last night.
Mr Johnson says he “totally deplores any threats to anybody, particularly female MPs,” but has refused to apologise for his use of language.
Several MPs say they’ve received death threats, and partially blame Mr Johnson’s words on Brexit, for fuelling extremist behaviour.
The Speaker of the Commons, John Bercow, described the culture within the chamber as “toxic,” and said it was the worst atmosphere he had ever witnessed in the House.

Clive Myrie looks into the day’s events on the BBC News at Ten with the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg and political correspondent Alex Forsyth.

Boris Johnson insists UK will leave EU on 31 October- BBC News

The prime minister has told the BBC that he will follow the law, but will leave the EU at the end of October.

“I will uphold the constitution, I will obey the law, but we will come out on October the 31st” he told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg.

A bill was passed by Parliament in early September to prevent the UK from leaving the European Union without a deal.

Brexit: Parliament prepares to shutdown as government suffers new defeat – BBC News

Parliament is preparing to shut down for 5 weeks but it’s been a busy day of political developments.

Huw Edwards presents live from Westminster as a new law has been passed that’s designed to prevent a no-deal Brexit. Later the Prime Minister is expected to fail in an attempt to call a general election, after opposition MPs refused to support him.

Boris Johnson visited Ireland today and said that leaving the EU without a deal would be a failure of statecraft. He was accused by the Irish Prime Minister of failing to come up with practical solutions to the so-called Irish backstop –the insurance policy to prevent a hard border. The BBC’s Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg rounds up the days events.

BBC News takes a close look at what the backstop is and, and what might come out of future negotiations, with Europe Editor Katya Adler.

And in a further twist this afternoon, the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, a key figure in the parliamentary Brexit process, announced that he’d be standing down, at the end of next month. The BBC’s Deputy Political Editor John Pienaar looks at his political career.
