Brexit: PM sends EU unsigned request seeking Brexit delay – BBC News

Boris Johnson has sent a request to the EU for a delay to Brexit – but without his signature.

The request was accompanied by a second letter, signed by Mr Johnson, which says he believes that a delay would be a mistake.

The PM was required by law to ask the EU for an extension to the 31 October deadline after losing a Commons vote.

EU Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that he had received the extension request.

He did not provide details of its content, but added that he will now consult EU leaders “on how to react”.

Hours after losing a crunch vote in a historic Saturday session in the House of Commons, the prime minister ordered a senior diplomat to send an unsigned photocopy of the call by MPs set out in the so-called Benn Act, passed last month.

Brexit: Boris Johnson agrees new Brexit deal with EU – BBC News

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared earlier today that he’d struck a new Brexit agreement with the European Union — ‘a great new deal’ in his words that ‘takes back control’. But crucially the deal still needs the approval of both the UK and European parliaments.

And at Westminster, there is uncertainty about the likelihood of MPs giving their approval when they meet in emergency session on Saturday. Northern Ireland’s DUP, whose support Boris Johnson needs, has already rejected it. And Labour says this deal is much worse for the UK than the one negotiated by Theresa May.

Huw Edwards presents the BBC News at Ten live from Brussels and hears from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, Ireland correspondent Emma Vardy, economics editor Faisal Islam and deputy political editor John Pienaar.

BREAKING NEWS: Boris Johnson on new Brexit deal

Prime Minister reacts to the new Brexit deal negotiated between the UK and the European Commission ahead of a special sitting of Parliament on Saturday.

He added: “Now is the moment for us to get Brexit done and then, together, to work on building our future partnership, which I think can be incredibly positive both for the UK and for the EU.”

Japan deploys military after deadly typhoon – BBC News

Japan has deployed tens of thousands of troops and rescue workers after one of the strongest storms in years hit, killing at least 18 people.

Typhoon Hagibis made landfall south of Tokyo on Saturday, moving north and bringing severe flooding.

Thirteen people are missing from the storm, public broadcaster NHK said.

In central Nagano prefecture, water surrounded Japan’s famous bullet trains while helicopters plucked stranded residents from rooftops.

A total of 27,000 military troops and other rescue crews have been deployed in relief operations, authorities said.

Turkish forces clash with Kurdish fighters in Syria – BBC News

Around sixty thousand people have fled their homes in North Eastern Syria on the second day of a major air and ground assault by Turkish forces. There’s been heavy fighting in the central border region. Some civilians have been killed and dozens more have been injured on both sides of the border. Turkey’s President Erdogan regards the Kurdish fighters in Syria as terrorists – he claims more than a hundred have been killed.

Turkey is trying to seize land just inside the border to create what it claims is a “safe zone” in Syria to settle some of the millions of Syrian refugees who have fled the eight-year war.

Sophie Raworth presents a roundup of the day’s news with the BBC’s International Correspondent Orla Guerin, Middle East Correspondent Quentin Sommerville and North America Editor Jon Sopel.
